A couple church planters I’m working with recently did gas-buy downs. Basically this means they paid the gas station to lower the price of gas for people. Both had positive feedback. Here are a few details:
How much per gallon did you buy down the gas?
Planter 1: .30 for regular; .34 for premium
Planter 2: $5 for purchases of $10 or more
How much total do you think you spent?
Planter 1: $331.00
Planter 2: $850.00
How many people ended up coming?
close to 100
170
Finally, do you have any sense that people came just because of the buy-down or was it just that people were “lucky” they came and gas was cheaper?
Planter 1: We had people on the street with signs - most people came in after seeing those signs; the owner changed his big sign as well during that time.
Planter 2: We had a lot of people “get lucky” but it almost seemed better that way…they could not believe we were doing this.
Anything you can do in outreach that surprises people in a positive way and makes them ask “why would you do this for me?” is great in my book!
