Assessment is the process of discerning whether a potential church planter is called to plant a church and whether the person is right for a specific new work. Research conducted by Dr. Charles Ridley identified 13 performance dimensions on success factors for church planters. (read more)
It is crucial for the church planter to understand their strengths and weaknesses based on these factors.
Assessment is often broken down into a pre-assessment (self-assessment) and a formal assessment (assessment by an independent group or organization).
Pre-assessments are often available for download or completion online. Before paying for a formal assessment, the church planter should perform at least a couple pre-assessments. Here are a few of the better ones:
- The Evangelical Free Church of America and the North American Mission Board have two of the best quick pre-assessment tools available.
- The Emerging Leadership Initiative has a great preassessment survey (it takes several hours to complete but is worth the wait)
- Global Church Advancement has a good set of questions for self-reflection
- Starter Survey from the Reformed Church in America (request the survey from sketcham@rca.org)
Additional widely available tools useful for pre-assessment: Keirsey Temperament Sorter (Myers Briggs type), DISC Profile, Emotional Intelligence Survey, and Spiritual Gifts Inventories.
