Planting a church is much like building a house. It takes many thousands of dollars, requires numerous specialized skills, consists of hundreds of discrete actions and takes a “general contractor” to make sure all the pieces come together just right.
A church planter that doesn’t use project management is just like someone who builds a house without blueprints and without coordinating all the specialized trades and supplies to ensure that the right materials and right people are there at the right time.
Oversimplified project management for church planters:
Step 1: Start with the end in mind. To develop a clear picture in your head of what the church will look like (draw blueprints). This clear picture will include your vision and values as well as a word picture describing what you church will look like, both on Sunday mornings and during the week.
Step 2: Work backward from the vision to decide out what actions you need to take in order to get from where you are to where you need to be. Tying each action to the vision of the church, assigning it a due date, a lead person, and a budget amount is your launch plan.
Step 3: Work the plan.
