Stay compliant without getting scammed

October 4th, 2007 by Patrick

As a corporation you are required to respond to federal and state governmental notices as well as file annual reports. You are usually notified of all such regulations via mail sent to the address you used in your incorporation paperwork.

Unfortunately, you may also receive mail from non-governmental organizations which appear to be official notices informing you of requirements and offering to help you stay compliant. Many of these offers are misleading at best and complete scams at worst. Often they charge a fee simply to send you a copy of a form you could download for free from your Secretary of State website or offer to complete form on your behalf… which you could do yourself in about 5 minutes. See a few more details here and here.

It is often difficult to distinguish between genuine and false notifications. Our advice is to very carefully read the ENTIRE notice, front and back, fine print and all, to ensure you understand if it is a genuine requirement and exactly what is required. When in doubt about whether a notice is legitimate, call your Secretary of State. You would be surprised how helpful your local government can be!

As a side note, another common misleading “notice” you may receive is from someone appearing to be your local yellow pages seeking your approval to renew your advertising. Often these are in fact solicitations for online yellow page services which have little to no value.
