I Don’t Like My Church Plant

January 9th, 2008 by Doug

Have you ever had anyone in your church who comes to you and says, “I’m just not being fed. I’d really like to see…”? We all have. Honestly I can say that I didn’t like the church I planted. I would have preferred the sermons to have been 45 minutes long and purely expository. I would have loved to have had 30 minutes of solid worship. And, I probably could have done without all the setup and tear down. But however much I didn’t like my church, I really loved it. Because, through the church people were coming to know Jesus.

Starting a church has very little to do with our own personal tastes and preferences as a church planter. That is why it is so important to not only know who you are targeting but what style of church is going to most effectively connect with them. During the pre-launch time, the church planter should intentionally seek to build friendships with people in their target group. Those friendships become the filter as the planter begins to plan what Sunday morning will look like. If you are planting a church for yourself, by all means ignore what will connect with your target group. But if you want a church that helps people know Jesus, you may need to be comfortable with saying, “I don’t like my church plant.”
