Keeping Church Planters Focused on People

it’s a marathon, not a sprint

There is so much to do in so little time when you’re planting a church that it may seem like a sprint to the launch date. When you’re out there getting it done, it can be easy to forget there is something that is supposed to happen after the launch. Hammering out all the details and setting things up for the first time is important, or there would be no plant to begin with. But remember that the whole point of the launch is what comes next: a healthy, missional, sustainable and reproducing church body. Wouldn’t it be sad to gear all of your efforts and vision toward getting the church launched? It would be great up till the day of the launch, but then what? The vision needs to be bigger than getting a new congregation started.

Spend your time with people. Invest in them, build them up and get them sold-out for the vision. Delegate task-oriented details whenever possible, and remember that even when you think that it would better if you just did it yourself, delegate and empower. You have to stay in this thing beyond the first 100 yards.
