Planting Space

I had the privilege of hearing Rick Warren speak this afternoon at Ebeneezer’s, a great coffeehouse owned by National Community Church. Among all the wisdom he shared with a room full of pastors was the statement that people grow through commitment, not to commitment. In other words, if you want people to grow, ask them to commit. Don’t try to grow them and then ask for a commitment.

So for church planters I want to encourage you not to be afraid to ask people on your launch team to commit. Whether it’s asking them to literally sign on the dotted line or simply looking them in the eye and asking if they are on board, you must ask people to commit. Set clear expectations and expect them to step up to them.
