A friend of mine and fellow church planter emailed this week to tell me that over the past weekend both of his trailers were stolen. All of the sound and lighting equipment, all of the children’s equipment, all off the tables, all of the projectors, gone. Church was literally unplugged and stripped down. The cool lesson learned is that church is about the people not the stuff.
How do you protect yourself from such disaster? You need insurance. There are two pieces of insurance every church planter should have. The first is professional liability. It protects against lawsuits involving bodily injury, personal injury, property damage, and sexual misconduct or molestation. Personal injury should include libel, slander, invasion of privacy, and other infringements on the rights of an individual or organization. There is a wide variation from company to company, so compare carefully. Make sure your coverage applies whether the injury or damage occurs at or away from the church and is caused by the negligence of a member, employee, or virtually anyone else acting on your behalf.
The second is an inland marine policy. This covers all of your equipment. This is a unique policy for portable equipment. This is what you want to have if both of your trailers are stolen. Here are three companies to contact for quotes: Church Mutual, Guide One, and Brotherhood Mutual. Depending on your state, you may also need to purchase workmen’s compensation insurance. Your insurance provider should be able to tell you if you need it.
