Church planters live and breathe ingenuity and perseverance. Throw a problem at a church planter and they are bound to turn it into an opportunity. I recently had two church planters that I worked with that obtained the majority of their equipment needs through donations. One planter, let’s call him Bob, had no money to buy equipment and three weeks before the church launched. I told him there were a few things we could get away without doing when launching a church, but having no equipment was not one of them. Bob borrowed a 15 passanger van from a local church and hit the road. He went from church to church across the state stopping and asking for donations of equipment that wasn’t being used. He completely loaded the van twice with audio video equipment. Some churches had recently upgraded equipment, other’s had equipment they weren’t using. One church had new speakers they had never figured out how to install and so they just gave them to Bob. At the end of the trip all that was lacking was a functioning sound board. He had collected three broken ones. He called up a church in another state and asked if they had an extra one. They are mailing one this week.
Lessons Learned:
- Churches like most American households have more stuff than they know what to do with.
- YOU DON’T GET WHAT YOU DON’T ASK FOR!
Be aggressive. You often don’t get what you don’t ask for. What if God has placed a needle in the haystack just waiting for you to find…and all you have to do is look or ask? What if there is an entire nearly new sound system just waiting to be donated? Pray. Pray hard. Be aggressive. Look hard. Listen. Network. Find the incredible provision that is just around the corner. Don’t let a small thing like money keep you from getting the stuff you need to plant a church.
