Keeping Church Planters Focused on People

an online community idea

Several planters I know that are connected with the New Thing Network are using ‘generosity cards’ as part of their launch plan. The idea is this: business cards are printed that say something like, “Today it’s on me, tomorrow pay it forward.” Launch team members are encouraged to practice generosity by paying for the coffee or meal or groceries of the person in line behind them and then leaving the card. Somewhere on the card is the church’s website, but there is no Bible-thumping or overt marketing. This is a great idea in so many ways.

Here’s a new twist on the idea that further ties it into community and the internet: either have the web address on the card go to a dedicated landing page or have a link on your home page that points to a dedicated page on your website where people can post stories about ‘paying it forward’. It could be set up like a blog so that it can be moderated. This could potentially create buzz as people continue to check back to read new stories. You could share those stories with your Launch Team (and eventually from the pulpit) as ‘wins’ for the team and the Kingdom. You could also encourage people to name the city where they gave or received the card as a way to track how far the cards have traveled, kind of like following dollar bills at www.wheresgeorge.com.

May your congregation be saturated with generosity.
