As Christians, it is imperative that we and the Church respect copyright laws. This is one of those areas that falls under Romans 13, not Acts 4. Dodging copyright law is the same as stealing from the artists that worked so hard to create the art, many of them our brothers and sisters in Christ.
If You’re Showing Video Clips
You’d better have a license or written permission from the copyright owner. Since most of us don’t know how to even begin the process of getting written permission, nor do we want to, churches can turn to CVLI (Christian Video Licensing International) for a blanket license.
What it Covers
Public viewings in your church of all, or any portion, of a film from participating producers.
They boast over 100 producers and have all of the major studios contracted.
What it Doesn’t Cover
- materials that have been copied from another source or recorded from television
- advertising specific titles publicly or charging an admission fee
- showing videos at locations other than where you hold worship services
Extras
As of the time of this post, CVLI is including a ScreenVue standard membership. This provides access to screenvue.com for over 1,200 illustration ideas from the same major movies you purchase or rent yourself. All ideas include a scene summary, themes, scripture references, start/stop times and more, saving you hours of time finding that perfect movie illustration for next Sunday’s sermon!
