Church planters love the Summer. Kids are out of school, families are active in the community, and there are several events to partner with where thousands of people will show up. Some of the best wins for outreach happen not when you plan your own Summer events but when you have a presence at an established event in the community. Its cheaper, more people will come, and it takes less time to plan. So here are some easy ideas:
1. Baby changing station. I have had at least one kid in diapers for 3.5 years. Festivals are a nightmare for changing a diaper. Make it easy on moms (and the occasional dad) by providing a baby changing station. Bring lots of wipes and extra diapers of all sizes. Provide mom with a cold non-caffienated beverage. This shows your church cares about kids. For extra credit provide a nursing station to give nursing moms a little privacy.
2. Cleaning crew. Have you ever noticed how trashed festivals get. Print some God is green tshirts and arm your volunteers with trash bags and gloves.
3. Provide free sno cones. Who doesn’t like a sno cone on a hot day. A good machine can be purchased for around $500. So buy don’t rent. This summer refreshment is sure to get lots of people to your booth.
4. Offer to provide volunteers for a kid’s play area. Your volunteers are already trained and background checked. That speaks volumes to a festival organizer. If they don’t have an area for kids, create one. Bring a bounce house, do face painting and temporary tattoos, hand out balloons and do some simple carnival games and hand out prizes.
5. Get the band in on the gig. Offer to let your band come out and play cover songs.
Keep it going. What ideas have you used to have a presence at summer festivals.
