Are Your E-Newsletters CAN-SPAM Compliant?

October 2nd, 2009 by Bradley

In 2003, the President signed the CAN-SPAM act into legislation. It set out standards for mass email and set out penalties for the worst offenders. Now I don’t think they’re going after churches, but there is wisdom and a measure of integrity in following the simple rules.

Here is the list as compiled by inbound marketing group HubSpot:

  1. Create and maintain a “Do Not Email” (DNE) list
  2. Make your opt-out process “uncomplicated”
  3. Add your company name and address to your email messages
  4. Allow opt-out by any means mentioned in an email (hotlink, reply to, Web-based unsubscribe requests)
  5. …process any non-Web-based unsubscribe requests within the 10 business days deadline

Not following these rules could annoy recipients, or worse, get you black-listed with a specific Internet Service Provider (ISP). One church discovered that no one with a Yahoo! email address was receiving their newsletter because the church had been blacklisted. Their emails were being stopped at the server level, and never even made it to the recipients’ spam folder, let alone their inbox.

A little effort here goes a long way.
