Key Vitals of a Church Plant

doctor2214627c9qk8 When you go to the doctor, there are a few things they check to determine your health: blood pressure, temperature, weight, pulse, etc.  If any of these are out of whack, your health is at risk.  A new church is no different.  Regardless of what model you use to start the church, there are key vitals that can be measured to reveal the health of your new church.  At Passion 4 Planting, these are the almost universal vitals for churches we work with:

  • Launch team size or number of people committed locally to starting the church.
  • Number of baptisms
  • Number of outreach and service Events
  • Amount of money fund raised
  • Number of marketing touches
  • On track with the launch plan.  We use Converge to track this.

During the planning process, we work with the church planter to identify what these key vitals are for the new church.  We also create benchmarks for health for each vital.  With a newborn baby, you have to go to the doctor monthly for checkups.  For each month their are developmental benchmarks they are looking for.  Its the same with a new church.  For each month the church planter should identify what the benchmark for health is for each key vital.  For example, if you plan to have a launch team of 50 people by launch, then you need to set goals along the way to determine if you are on track.

Finally, for each key vital we identify 3-4 key strategies for achieving health.  These strategies are incorporated into the launch plan of the church.  Each month these vitals are measured to ensure a healthy church is being started.

What key vitals have would identify for a new church?
